Consider the closed hemispherical container shown in the picture at right. Its upper surface is a hemisphere of radius R; its lower surface is a flat disc of the same radius. The container is filled with a gas at a pressure P.

What is the net force exerted by the gas on the upper (hemispherical) surface? The surface area of a sphere of radius R is 4R² , and the area of a circle of radius R is R² .
Ignore the weight of the contained gas.
